Can I tell the difference? Most of the time, yes.
    Is cost a factor? Yes.
Last time I had any portrait work done? Several years ago. School portraits do not count, and are not always purchased.

I can tell the difference most of the time, but cost is definitely a factor. Part of the reason I got my own DSLR and took some classes was to save money on photos of my kids. That said, nothing beats a professional family photo shoot! The mini sessions are as awesome option for tighter budgets, too.

To answer your specific question, I allowed myself to be used as a maternity model for a budding photographer and while I was happy with the results, there were definitely things I noticed in the final products that would have been different from a more seasoned professional (say Tiptoe). For example, I was posed in tall grass, but she didn't clear away the grass in front of me. So there would be pieces of grass in front of my belly (focal point for a maternity session) or in some cases even my face. I think this person has talent, but just needs more practice.
